Almost 500 reports of human rights violations by police force: Commission

The police force is considered the government institution that most often conducts human rights violations reported by public, the National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) announced Thursday.

Over the past four months, the commission has received 491 reports complaining of the police’s lack of awareness in upholding human rights.

Komnas HAM deputy chairman Nurkholis said second place went to regional administrations with 210 reports, followed by the Army and civil servants.

“We responded to all complaints and sent our recommendations to all related institutions,” he said during a hearing with the House of Representatives in Jakarta, as quoted by kompas.com.

Despite the negative report, the Komnas HAM regards the police force as the most active party in giving feedback on the commission’s recommendations, Nurkholis added.
