Jakarta, May 7, 2020/Indonesia Media – The Indonesian national consumer protection agency (BPKN)’s response has coincided with the policy ‘Large-scale social restrictions’ or PSBB since it was declared by the central government and regional government of DKI Jakarta, an effort to prevent potential spread of the coronavirus. “We have no choice except we make big an effort to contain the virus,” the Agency’s communications and education coordinator Arief Safari told Indonesia Media (IM)

The policy has implications for the limitations in the lives of citizens, especially residents who live in the Jakarta area, including for refugee communities living in Jakarta Area, including for refugee communities living in Jakarta Area. Everybody has to carry out appropriate measure of prevention control, such as regular handwashing. Besides, in a perspective of consumer protection, Arief completely agree with the government’s warning for people not to travel home for Lebaran festival this year. “This (warning) helps to prevent the spread of coronavirus. We also support mass organizations’ efforts such as placing temporary banner saying ‘the health of passengers is our priority’ in the railway station Tanahbang (central Jakarta). That is another way to provide effective information for consumers,” said Arief.

Many urban poor in Jakarta such as Abdul (55), scavenger in Jakarta, decided to return to Kuningan, west Java province since her income kept decreasing due to  the outbreak hit the capital city. Husni was not the only one to return to her home town, as transportation authorities in West Java have recorded buses from Greater Jakarta carrying thousand passengers, coming into the area. “We hope the government step up measures to provide packages for poor families in Jakarta more effective. Besides the food donation for 2.6 million families is another measure,” said Arief. (sl/IM)
