Jakarta, September 2023/Indonesia Media – The commander of Indonesian Army’s Naval Base (TNI Lantamal) IX Ambon, Brig. Gen. Said Latuconsina saw the potential of the economy of the eleven regency/cities in the province of Maluku in the development of the best commodities, even though they haven’t been utilised to the maximum. The best commodity across the regency, including the outermost island in Southwest Maluku (MBD) Regency encompasses the livestock sector and fishery.  Meanwhile, Aru Islands regency also has the potential to cultivate the business of cattle farming.  “I together with the regent of the Aru Islands, Johan Gonga, had the opportunity to travel around the South Aru region. That region is a very wide expanse of grassland, approximately 680 hectares. Unfortunately, it is not utilized. If it were, farmers wouldn’t need to look for wefts anymore, the grass would be enough to feed the livestock animals. There is a clear potential.” Brig. Gen. Said Latucosina stated to editors.

Indonesia will have its golden age in 2045. By then, Indonesia will reach its even number of one hundred or one century. Indonesia’s projects are heading in the direction of a developed country that is equal to a superpower country. That historical momentum may still be around a quarter of a century. The economic potential of the eastern region of Indonesia, especially Maluku, certainly must be parallel with other regions in order to make the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045 come true. “From 11 regions/cities, perhaps only Ambon has zero level of poverty. Ambon, as the province’s capital city, remains connected with ten other regions/cities. Despite the zero level of poverty in Ambon, the people still voice their concerns about environmental issues, especially regarding clean water and waste management. It is predicted that in the next few years, the people of Ambon will have a shortage of clean water. This also challenges the movement of KTI for the program of Golden Indonesia 2045.” stated Brig. Gen. Said Latucosina when he became the source person at Public Discussion at FIB University of Indonesia’s auditorium, Depok, bringing the theme of Golden Indonesia 2045, Moving from Eastern Indonesia.

The economy of Moa Island in MBD, especially the business of cattle farming, buffalos, and horses has plenty of potential. But breeders have experienced difficulties in the past. Therefore, every time summer comes, the number of livestock animals that die due to the drought reaches thousands. The central government through the Ministry of Defense has just succeeded in solving the issue of livestock deaths by getting a few clean water sources that are streamed to seven villages and four hamlets. This is the response to the complaints from the people regarding the clean water of Moa Island. Therefore the well of clean water source made by Kemhan was officiated directly by the Defense Minister, Prabowo Subianto. “A few days ago, I went there with the governor of Maluku and Coordination Forum for Regional Leaders (FORKOPIMDA), accompanied by the Ministry of Defense visiting MBD that used to unite with the regency of Tanimbar Islands. Then, after expansion, it became its own regency, namely Southwest Maluku or MBD. I see the potential, especially in farming and fishery, as extraordinary. The business of livestock breeding could be utilised to increase the economy of the public. The inauguration of the water source and those pipes are hoped to stretch the farming of MBD,” stated Latucosina.

The fishery of Maluku encompasses three Republic of Indonesia Fisheries Management Area (WPP NRI), namely WPP NRI 714, 715, AND 718 have a fishery potential of 3,9 Million tons per year, or income resulting in approximately 117 trillion rupiah, the fact is, the total of fishes caught are only 543.000 ton or 12 percent, fishery sector must be a priority to be managed well for the wellbeing of the people of Maluku.

The tourism sector has also become the mainly focused discussion other than natural tourism and culture, the geographical condition of Maluku province very much supports the nautical tourism sector that attracts the interests of local tourists and foreigners to snorkel, dive, as well as beach tourism. According to Brig. Gen. Said Latucosina, the management of the tourism sector in the future must be managed professionally by applying four rules that are environmentally sustainable, socially & culturally acceptable, economically viable, and technologically appropriate.

Another potential is establishing the airfield owned by the TNI (Indonesia National Military) Navy in the South of Aru. The regent of Aru Islands has made a request to TNI AL by directly facing Indonesian Navy Chief (KASAL) Admiral Muhammad Ali Profile to utilize that airport other than for military importance, it is also open for public/commercial flights. Transporting people and logistic shipments, especially crop transportation by air could be efficient, automatically it could increase the farming sector and fishery of Aru Island. “All this time, if the weather is bad, shipping vessels face difficulties. Therefore, cooperating in utilizing the airport will not only be for military flights but also opened for commercial flights.” Brig. Gen. Said Latucosina stated. (sl/IM)
