200 Couples Tie the Knot in Jakarta, Indonesia

Indonesia’s state-owned gas distributor, PT. Perusahaan Gas Negara, organized this mass wedding in Jakarta.

And hundreds of poor Indonesian couples who can’t afford a marriage license took the opportunity to tie the knot.

The celebration took place on Kartini Day, a national holiday in Indonesia.

[Reza Pahlevi, Company Representative]:
“This year there are 200 couples, participating in this event. We hope we can help people who are not able to afford the administrative cost of formalizing their marriage.”

Each couple received about $56 as well as a dowry for the groom of $33.

And for many at the wedding, they were happy to get help in getting a government marriage license.

[Muhammad Tubagus, Groom]:
“We could not afford the wedding, that’s why we joined this mass wedding. We have been together for long time and it is too bad that we do not have the license.”

[Humala, Marriage Participant]:
“I am very happy and I thank God we can get the license, as my sons desperately need it.”

Indonesian couples need a marriage license for official purposes such as obtaining birth certificates and for school documentation.
