Jakarta, September 12, 2024/Indonesia Media – The traditional Chinese art exhibition by the Shanghai Art Collection Museum in collaboration with the Indonesia Heritage Agency (IHA) at the National Gallery (September 6 – October 7) is like an exhibition that has previously been exhibited by art groups and lovers from Japan and Korea. A few months ago, Japanese artists exhibited a variety of beautiful puppet art. Meanwhile, Korea is also similar but not the same, namely the variety of beautiful ceramic art. “Many people are interested, from within and outside the country. Even though this is the first time (as of September 6) there has been a paid exhibition at the National Gallery, it does not reduce the enthusiasm of the public and foreign tourists to see the various works of Shanghai artists,” exhibition guide Nunik told the Editors.

Located in Building D of the National Gallery of Indonesia, this art exhibition that showcases the beauty of various arts from the Bamboo Curtain Country has attracted the attention of visitors from various backgrounds including businessmen and politicians. The exhibition entitled ‘New Rhythm of the Maritime Silk Road’ displays approximately 80 contemporary works from around 50 artists from China. “A few months ago, a group of Japanese artists exhibited the beauty of various puppet arts. Korea too, but ceramic art. Now, Shanghai China is like equalizing its artwork in the National Gallery with the beauty of various embroidery arts, paper cutting arts and so on,” said Nunik.

Indonesia, especially the National Gallery, is the fourth point where this exhibition is held. According to her, the purpose of this exhibition is to introduce more widely the original art that originates from the tradition there, and this time (6/9 – 7/10) comes from a group of Shanghai artists. “But as a comparison of embroidery art with Indonesia, (Shanghai’s works) are different. In Indonesia, there is embroidery art. Like Affandi Koesoema’s wife (18 May 1907 – 23 May 1990; a painter known as the Maestro of Indonesian Painting), she embroiders. But her work is different from Shanghai embroidery,” said Nunik.

At first glance, Shanghai embroidery art looks like it is made from brush strokes of Chinese calligraphy or Shufa . But in fact, the works exhibited at the National Gallery are made from embroidery. The materials for embroidery are mainly from thread with sulk (silk cloth), special paper and so on. Shanghai paper cutting art may not be much different from Indonesia. But the popularity of Shanghai paper cutting is much more than Indonesia. In other words, paper cutting art has become part of the daily lives of people in Shanghai. “In Indonesia, there are almost no artists who exhibit paper cutting works. In Shanghai or its surroundings, paper cutting is one of the popular art activities. Embroidery and paper cutting works are exhibited by different artists, but one Shanghai group,” said Nunik.
