Jember, October 18, 2024/Indonesia Media – The Board of Trustees of the University of Jember (UNEJ), Sigit Hendrawan Samsu sees the driving factors of motivation to project the Faculty of Medicine (FK) UNEJ as a center of excellence in the field of agromedicine in the Southeast Asia region in 2025. There are several supporting factors for his motivation to build FK UNEJ as an educational institution that excels in the field of agromedicine in Southeast Asia. “Our work motivation, if we say (the work) is difficult, yes it is difficult … but if we believe that the work is easy, it can also be easy. In addition, there are many factors that allow FK UNEJ to become a center for agromedicine. Especially the condition of Jember, which since the Dutch era, has been a center for agroindustry research,” Sigit H. Samsu told the Editors.
Previously, FK UNEJ held a special guest lecture event featuring two of its founders, namely Prof. Dr. dr. Satyanegara, Sp.BS., and Sigit Hendrawan Samsu. The guest lecture event (17/10) which took place at the FK UNEJ Auditorium was a historic moment because the two figures were the founders of FK UNEJ. Prof. Satyanegara currently also serves as Senior Director of Tzu Chi Hospital, while Sigit Hendrawan Samsu is the founder of PT Mitra Tani Dua Tujuh, a leading agribusiness company in Jember. “The infrastructure for agromedical research and development, especially the physical teaching hospital building, will be operational by the end of 2024. The number of FK UNEJ graduates has also reached 1,535 (one thousand, five hundred, thirty-five) bachelors. FK has been established since 25 years ago. There are even three specialist programs; (namely) surgery, anesthesiology and orthopedics,” said the alumni of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Trisakti University, West Jakarta.
Another factor, FK UNEJ is located in the center of agro-industry, especially coffee, cocoa, tobacco, edamame, and so on. Agro-industry in Jember is closely related to health, and has the potential to complement each other. Agromedicine, as a branch of applied medicine, focuses primarily on understanding and overcoming various health problems related to agricultural activities in a broad sense and their environmental impacts. FK UNEJ is committed to efforts to improve the health of farmers, their families, and users of agricultural products. FK UNEJ focuses not only on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to agriculture, but also on disease prevention and efforts to improve the quality of health of the agricultural community as a whole. “Its history (of FK UNEJ agromedicine) cannot be separated from the role of Prof. Satyanegara (a neurosurgeon) and Prof. Sangkot Marzuki Marzuki (a pioneer of molecular biology research in Indonesia). When FK was about to be built, it was initially a medical faculty and a biomolecular laboratory. Then we came in (appointed as the board of trustees) and focused on regenerative medicine, anti-aging . That was the initial aspiration of the founders of FK UNEJ, until finally it became an agromedical center in Southeast Asia,” said the CEO of PT Berkah Maju Sejahtera ( Aerostarjet Aviation ). (LS/IM)
