Jakarta, January 19, 2025/Indonesia Media – In Chinatown, precisely on Jl. Pancoran Glodok, traders of Chinese New Year knick-knacks/accessories claim to have started to harvest from sales ranging from angpao, stickers to statues of Buddha or the Goddess Kwan Im. Although the location of the kiosks/shops of the traders on Jl. Pancoran is only about 100 meters from the location of the major fire (15/1) with eight fatalities, the sales value has increased compared to last year. “Some people buy angpao, stickers, even statues of Buddha, the Goddess Kwan Im. If the angpao is cheap, starting from IDR 10 thousand – 50 thousand which contains 10 pieces. (price) Lanterns IDR 200 thousand / piece, decorations starting from IDR 50,000 – 200,000 , “said Aini, one of the Chinese New Year accessory traders in Pancoran Glodok.

Chinese New Year 2025 falls on January 29, marking the start of the Year of the Wood Snake in the Chinese calendar. Here are some facts about the Wood Snake, the arrival of this year is interpreted as a year full of positive energy. The Snake zodiac itself is the sixth zodiac in a 12-year cycle that symbolizes wisdom, intelligence, and adaptability. Meanwhile, the wood element symbolizes growth, stability, and harmony. “I only sell, I don’t understand the meaning of the Wood Snake zodiac. What is clear is that all accessories, knick-knacks with snake images and motifs. But it seems that signs of economic growth, stability, and harmony are visible. My sales figures on D-10 (ten days before Chinese New Year) continue to increase,” said Aini.

Meanwhile, Anna helps sell knick-knacks in Glodok every day. She worked in Taiwan as a nurse for the elderly from 2015 to 2021. She has been fluent in Mandarin for six years. So when there are buyers from Chinese expatriates in Jakarta and its surroundings, she is the one who serves them directly. One of them is Mr. Lin Ah-fu林 啊 嗎from China who lives in an apartment on Jl. Gajah Mada, and has opened a metal cutting factory in Cakung, East Jakarta. “Mr. Lin Ah-fu bought angpao, stickers and so on. He wanted to install them in his factory in Cakung and in his apartment. In total, he spent IDR 2 million. But he didn’t buy the Buddha statue which cost IDR 5 million. It is a bit expensive, but (the buyer) can bargain,” said Anna.

In a different place, a Chinese resident living in the Gading Serpong housing complex, South Tangerang (Tangsel) Banten, Joan admitted that the price of the Buddha statue sold in Glodok was very expensive. Joan, who celebrates Chinese New Year every year, also admitted that she already has a statue on the altar in her house. But if you compare the price of the statue sold in Pancoran Glodok with the one she bought elsewhere, the difference (in price) is far. “I bought the God of the Land Statue along with the houses, a total of only Rp 3 million. That too, (the seller) has already made a lot of profit,” said Joan, who is also a businesswoman . (LS/IM)
