Jakarta, November 15, 2024/Indonesia Media – Around 25 years ago, neurosurgeon Prof. Satyanegara was confused when asked for his support in establishing the Faculty of Medicine (FK) of Jember University (UNEJ) by a national Indonesian private entrepreneur, Sigit H. Samsu. Prof. Satyanegara, when contacted by Sigit Samsu, was very busy, especially handling various hospitals in the regions, the Central Pertamina Hospital (RSPP), several private clinics and even providing assistance in the health services of the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia, the late Soeharto. “25 years have passed, FK UNEJ has graduated almost 1,535 (one thousand, five hundred, thirty-five) doctors. But for the construction of a teaching hospital , it is very difficult. The physical construction of the building is planned to be completed by the end of 2024,” Prof. Satyanegara told the Editors in his office at Tzu Chi Hospital PIK, North Jakarta.

On the other hand, he is also trusted as Chairman of the Board of Trustee of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) President University (PU) Jababeka Bekasi since March 2024. The situation is almost the same, he also admitted that he was invited by his close friend, Sigit H. Samsu to establish a teaching and research hospital FKPU. Two FKs with different Vision and Missions. FK UNEJ projects itself as an Agromedical Center in Indonesia. While FKPU projects more on efforts to create healthy, productive humans including by utilizing modern biotechnology. “More broadly, the hope is that Mr. Darmono (Setyono Djuandi Darmono, founder of PT Jababeka) will build a complete medical city . Health human resources, especially specialist doctors, medical equipment that must be above standard and so on. The plan to lay the first stone for the construction of a teaching hospital (FKPU) next week, by the Minister of Health. This, (Jababeka Medical City) is a very big dream, Mr. Darmono,” said Prof. Satyanegara.

In addition, Prof. Satyanegara admitted that he was interested in SD Darmono’s leadership vision. With the ability to see opportunities amidst challenges, he continues to direct the company towards a successful and equitable future. His leadership vision is to build Jababeka Medical City with the Yi Kung Yi San philosophy, namely a picture of someone who is determined and persistent, and is not afraid to face all difficulties. This philosophy is with the historical narrative of an old grandfather who was previously considered stupid by his surroundings. The grandfather was determined to move the mountain, considering that he lived in a poor village. While behind the mountain, there was a rich and prosperous village. The grandfather was determined to level the mountain with determination and persistence, not afraid to face difficulties. “That’s what interested me, Yi Kung Yi San. As chairman of the Board of Trustee, I only prepare various plans for the establishment of a teaching hospital, research center and so on. Medical city, later attract patients from abroad. They don’t just want to cure diseases, but get better health,” said Prof. Satyanegara.

Meanwhile, the vision and mission of FK UNEJ as an agromedical center in Indonesia and an excellent educational institution in the field of Agromedicine in Southeast Asia in 2025. Sigit Samsu and Prof. Satyanegara, had worked hard to raise funds including from several cigarette companies, including Tjap Gudang Garam, Bentoel Group, Sampoerna. All the money collected from donations from cigarette companies in East Java, was handed over and managed by the Foundation. At that time, UNEJ already had a faculty of dentistry (FKG). So the Foundation decided to borrow each other’s teaching and learning facilities and infrastructure, especially the laboratory. The journey and hard work of the two close friends realized that the construction of the FK and the medical education study program (PPSD) required a lot of money at that time. “The two of us, and Prof. Kabul (UNEJ Chancellor for the 1995-2003 period) laid the first stone for the construction of the FK building 25 years ago. The difference is, PU is private and UNEJ is a state university. There is a difference between the two. but the construction of teaching hospitals , (between PU and UNEJ) is equally difficult. And to maintain prestige, each FK must have its own hospital. If a teaching hospital has been built, the level of its capabilities must be reviewed starting from (hospital) type A to E,” said Prof. Satyanegara. (LS/IM)
