Human Rights International ,whose members consist of several human rights organizations worldwide,went to Washington D.C. between March 6th to March 10th, 2000. We were invited to meet Senator Barbara Boxer and the State Department. In addition, we got an opportunity to meet with the State Department officers, several congressional staffs, and other Non Government Organizations (NGO)staffs. The meeting with the State Department was interesting because the head of the Southeast Asia desk told us that Indonesia is getting much better and he said that 4 out of the 6 conditions to reinstate the military assistance to Indonesia has been satisfied.

We have talked to the staff of Senator Barbara Boxer regarding the asylum situation. We asked  the U.S. government to expedite their green cards for all asylees.  We have also met with the staff of Senator Diane Feinstein and she will continue to pressure the Indonesian government to prosecute the perpetrators. We met several staff of congressional representatives who showed concerns about the situation in Indonesia. Many of the congressional staffs indicated their supports for international tribunal if the judicial system in Indonesia does not work in this coming months. Some have shown concern about religious persecution in Indonesia especially in Ambon and recently in Lombok (HRI/Indonesia Media)
