Indonesian-made rocket hits farm in test launch

JAKARTA, Indonesia — A test rocket fired by Indonesia’s state-run weapons manufacturer crashed into a farm and seriously wounded the owners.

Research and Technology Ministry spokesman Wawan Bayu said Friday 10 rockets were fired earlier this week in East Java by developer PT Pindad.

He says one 9-foot (3-meter) long RKN 200 rocket missed its target because of high winds and the couple were hit by shrapnel.

Bayu says farmer Muhamad Nuran, 55, was admitted to a hospital with severe burns and his 45-year-old wife Tiamah had her left leg amputated.

Indonesia’s military arsenal has become outdated because of a massive drop in spending since the fall of late dictator Suharto.
