Multiculture Events at Westhoff Elementary School
Indonesia Media
Multicultural activities and programs at school allow students to share their pride in their heritage while learning about other cultures. Each year students and their parents from Westhoff Elementary School in Walnut,CA, participate in “Culture Fair” event. It’s one of the major event in each fall season, where the families share aspects of their cultures, including food, music, and dance. This is a great way to start the beginning of the school year with such major event.
It was quite an honor to represent Indonesia in this event, where about 10 mothers plus their kids who are attending Westhoff got a chance to get involved. The mothers wore very traditional “kebàya”,and the kids were adorable, where they also wore Indonesian traditional outfits. They definitely caught the attention of others because these kids are so cute, especially with photo pictures flashing all over them when they were in line for the fashion show up on stage.
At their tables were displayed: traditional Indonesian music instruments, angklung, wayang, books about Indonesia , and others. The mothers prepared food and dessert tasting with a theme ‘jajanan pasar’ display such as: otak-otak, ongol-ongol, bubur ketan hitam, bubur sumsum, all kinds of krupuk, and so on. Such annual event gave Westhoff School Community a strong school environment where they always dedicate to the success of all students. Westhoffs enrollment is approximately 550 students ranging from Grade K-5 with student population approximately 76% Asian.
