Targeted Fields: Open to all fields.

Open To: Prospective/Current Graduate Students. Students Working on Master's Thesis. Students Working on Doctoral Dissertation.

Citizenship: Open only to U.S. citizens.

Eligibility Requirements: BA degree or, in the creative and performing arts, 4 years of professional study and/or experience. Must have proficiency in the language of the host country. Law applicants may hold a JD. Preference is given to candidates who have not resided or studied in the country to which they are applying for more than six months. Enrolled students must apply through their home institution.

Stipend: Stipends vary by country.

Program Description: Approximately 1,100 fellowships give recent B.S./B.A. graduates, master's and doctoral candidates, young professionals and artists opportunities for personal development and international experience. Projects may include university coursework, independent library or field research, classes in a music conservatory or art school, special projects in the social or life sciences, or a combination in over 140 countries. Fellowship amounts vary depending on country. Awards are for one academic year.

FULBRIGHT-HAYS DOCTORAL DISSERTATION RESEARCH ABROAD PROGRAM (DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION)

Targeted Fields: Humanities. Social Sciences. School of Arts and Architecture. School of Education and Information Studies. School of Management. Specifically fields related to modern foreign languages, cultural, and area studies.

Open To: Students Working on Doctoral Dissertation.

Citizenship: Open only to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Eligibility Requirements: Must be advanced to doctoral candidacy at time of tenure, plan a teaching career at the college level in the U.S. and have language skills necessary to carry out research. Those planning careers in government, international development, and the professions are also eligible. Application must be submitted electronically using e-Application through the e-GRANTS system at http://e-grants.ed.gov.

Stipend: Awards range from $15,000 to $60,000 for travel, living and research expenses.

Deadline: 10/5/2006 UCLA Campus Deadline.

Program Description: Approximately 150 fellowships for dissertation research abroad in any country outside of Western Europe. Support is provided for 6 to 12 months abroad. Must be nominated by the UCLA Graduate Division.

JAPAN SOCIETY FOR THE PROMOTION OF SCIENCE (JSPS) POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS FOR FOREIGN RESEARCHERS

Targeted Fields: Humanities. Life Sciences. Physical Sciences. Social Sciences.

Open To: Postdoctoral Scholars.

Citizenship: Must be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.

Eligibility Requirements: Hold a doctorate degree when the fellowship goes into effect, which must have been received within six year prior to April 2 of that year. Applicant must have arranged in advance a research plan with a Japanese host.

Stipend: Award includes a round-trip air ticket, monthly allowance of 392,000 yen, a settling-in allowance of 200,000 Yen, a travel allowance of 58,500 yen, and insurance.

Deadline: 9/10/2006 Deadline may vary if applying through a nominating authority.

Program Description: Approximately 200 awards will be granted each recruitment period for scholars to conduct research in Japan for a period of 12-24 months. Program is aimed at providing support for cooperative research, under the guidance of Japanese hosts, at leading universities, inter-university research institutes, and science research corporations. Applicants may apply either through a host scientist in Japan or one of the two nominating authority in the United States: National Institutes of Health (NIH) or Social Science Research Council (SSRC).

[Humanities or Social Science research on Southeast Asia is fully fundable, as long as the research is conducted under the sponsorship of a Japanese host. Japan has a number of institutions doing extensive research on Southeast Asia.]

Open To: Postdoctoral Scholars.

Citizenship: Applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of an eligible country.

Eligibility Requirements: Hold a doctorate degree when the fellowship goes into effect, which must have been received within ten year prior to April 2 of that year. Applicant must have arranged in advance a research plan with a Japanese host.

Stipend: Award includes a round-trip air ticket, monthly allowance of 392,000 yen, a settling-in allowance of 200,000 Yen, a travel allowance of 58,500 yen, a monthly research support allowance of 81,000 yen, and insurance.

Deadline: Open Deadline - Host institutes have six application deadlines. Applicants should contact them well in advance of the deadline.

Program Description: Approximately 60 awards will be granted for scholars to conduct research in Japan for a period of 15 days to 11 months. Program is aimed at providing opportunities to young pre- and post-doctoral researchers from the US, Canada, and Europe to conduct, under the guidance of their hosts, cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions.

[Humanities or Social Science research on Southeast Asia is fully fundable, as long as the research is conducted under the sponsorship of a Japanese host. Japan has a number of institutions doing extensive research on Southeast Asia.]
