Asian-American And Pacific Islander Community Joins Forces To Support Governor Schwarzenegger

Sacramento, CA – More than 50 Asian-American and Pacific Islander (API) community leaders today announced the formation of a coalition in support of Governor Schwarzenegger’s leadership and his bold vision for California. These leaders represent the more than 24 ethnic groups that comprise California’s API community, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, East Indian, and Filipino Americans, who support the Governor’s re-election.
“The Asian-American and Pacific Islander community contributes tremendously to California’s culture, economy, and way of life,” said Californians for Schwarzenegger Coalitions Director Jennifer Johnson. “The Governor appreciates this community’s support and looks forward to working with this team to communicate his bold vision for our future.”
Commitment to quality education for all of California’s students, improving the business climate, and creating more jobs are just a few of the values the API community shares with Governor Schwarzenegger.
“As an immigrant, Governor Schwarzenegger is a man who understands the successes and struggles of the Asian-American community, and he is focused on increasing opportunities for all Californians,” said Assemblyman Van Tran, coalition co-chair. “The Governor’s leadership has given Asian-Americans and all Californians a clear choice for better schools, a stronger business climate, and investment in our infrastructure.”
"In a few short years, Governor Schwarzenegger has repealed the car tax, created over 500,000 new jobs, fought for the environment, and has advocated for a comprehensive Strategic Growth Plan for the needs of all Californians – and he has done all of this without raising taxes,” said Sean Liou, coalition co-chair and former California Recovery Team chair. “He has worked with all members of the Legislature and the Asian-American community to strengthen the future for our children."
“The Governor has been helpful with all ethnic communities and numerous Asian issues and has been an advocate for the farm workers in California,” added Andy Imutan, coalition co-chair and co-founder of United Farm Workers. “He is also concerned about the Filipino veterans who have unselfishly risked their lives to protect our country and will continue to champion all of the programs and benefits for the veterans of our state.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2004, 12 percent of California residents were of API decent. In an effort to better serve and communicate with this important and growing segment of California’s population, Californians for Schwarzenegger has launched a Chinese language Web site that can be accessed by visiting http://www.joinarnold.com/.
Coalitions are community-based groups that exist to support Governor Schwarzenegger and his vision and plan to move California forward. Coalition members work within their communities across the state to share the Governor’s optimistic and bold agenda for the future of this state with other Californians.
