Barnsdall Gallery Theatre presents
The Sky is Still Overcast
Can
breast cancer, death, and children growing up in a dump
be funny? Maybe we need the humor in order to tackle these
issues head-on. Barnsdall Gallery Theatre and Sri Susilowati
present The Sky is Still Overcast. Susilowati and Sri Dance
Company reflect on these themes in an evening of dance with
original choreography, spoken word and poetry, and new musical
composition. Sundays, May 21 and 28, at 3:00pm. A preview
excerpt of this program will be presented at “A Taste of
C.O.L.A.” on Friday, May 19, 2006 at 8pm. All shows will
be at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre, 4800 Hollywood Blvd.,
Los Angeles, CA 90027. This event is sponsored by Department
of Cultural Affairs City of Los Angeles as part of the Ten-Year
Anniversary of C.O.L.A. (City of Los Angeles) Individual
Artist Fellowships. Admission is free and open to the public.
Seriocomic choreographer Sri Susilowati, the
creator of the Dancing in the Margins Festival that showcases
traditional and world choreographers exploring contemporary
themes, presents three new works of her own. The first work,
Love’s All Worshipped Tomb, explores the emotions and feelings
surrounding the experience of breast cancer. Whereas on
the one hand, breasts give women their early sexual identity,
for those who have breast cancer, they can also be sources
of travail. Deal recounts the story from the Mahabharata
of Sawitri and Death bargaining over her husband’s life.
This adaptation of the well-known story explores love, sacrifice,
and the nature of friendship. Lucky (if the fruit is sweet,
but if it’s bitter, what then?) is a meditation on children
growing up in a dump, learning to love life, despite its
challenges.
Sri Susilowati is a Los Angeles based choreographer
whose recent projects have included the creation of the
annual Dancing in the Margins Festival (El Portal Theatre,
North Hollywood), choreography, A name is all that remains
(premiered at Highways, Santa Monica), and a appearance
at the Los Angeles Women’s Theater Festival. Originally
from Indonesia, Sri has worked on a wide variety of artistic
projects including contemporary dance, choreography for
large venue concerts, and creative movement for film.
Along with Sri Dance Company, the evening
will feature:
• New music by Albert Chang, an in-house composer at Sonicpool,
a post-production studio in Hollywood and recipient of the
2003-2004 Henry Mancini Award for the Composition in Film
and Television.
• Narration by nationally known actress, Lynn Johnson, co-founder
of Glitter & Razz Productions in San Francisco.
• Text by Robert Earle, whose work has been performed at
Highways in Santa Monica, El Portal Theatre in Hollywood,
and the Los Angeles Women’s Theater Festival.
